Day 211: Angel's Cradle

http://www.theprovince.com/health/Abandoned+baby+drop+opened+Vancouver+Paul+Hospital/2968055/story.html

St Paul's Hospital will be providing a safe place for women to drop off their unwanted babies. The mother gives birth to the baby. If they don't want to keep the baby, the can drop the baby off anonymously. The drop off is located beside the emergency door at St Paul's Hospital. The mother can open the small door, drop the baby off and leave. Once the mother closes the small door, an alarm will go on and a nurse will attend to the baby. The baby is then taken care of and passed on to the ministry of children and family development.

I was very shocked when I first read the article in the Province. I saw it on the 6 o clock news. The anchorperson interviewed a doctor at St Paul's hospital. The doctor said that they have mothers who give birth and then leave the hospitals without their babies and it happens once a month. I can't believe that happens. That is horrible to abandon a baby. It is good that the hospital provides a safe place for the babies. I think the hospital realizes there are many woman who abandon their babies so they wanted to provide a safe place for them to leave the baby. Babies have been abandoned in the garbage dump, in the garbage bins, and even at the door step of the hospital. I do realize that not all pregnancies are planned and some are a result of a negative experience. There are many types of contraceptives available. There are also many clinics that will provide contraceptives and counselling. There is also the avenue of a legal adoption process. To abandon a baby is the ultimate last resort.

Day 210: Reunions

Restaurant blog update: Chili Garden
http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/chili-garden.html

These few weeks has and will been reunions for me. The other night I saw a friend whom I haven't seen in 15 years. We went to elementary school together. I forgot that we even went to high school together. It was thanks to Facebook that we reconnected. We have two mutual friends. One was here in town for a short while. He was in town for a few days and I saw him one night and saw her also. I saw her for only about 30 mins. It was right before my swimming lesson. We had intentions to meet again because we live so close but we didn't. We finally got together with the other mutual friend. Because of all the things happening at the Olympics and my trip to Chicago, it took us about 3 months to get together. We just went out for dinner. It was a two and a half hour dinner because there was so much to catch on. We had to catch up on the last 15 years.

My next reunion is on May 8. There were 5 of us that hung out in 1998. There was my two cousins, my guy friend, my girl friend and myself. We did many things together. Life happens and we went our separate ways. For the past 10 or so years we haven't seen each other. One cousin found my guy friend on Facebook last week and suggested we go for coffee. I though if three of us were going to hang out, might as well get the other two to come also. I got their emails and emailed all of them to see if they wanted to come together for a reunion. All of them are up for it! We are going out for dinner and bringing our significant others. There is lots to catch up on from the last 10 years.

Day 208: Dine Out Vancouver

This should be a foodie's dream time of the year. It is Tourism Vancouver's promotion to get people out to eat at participating restaurants. There are 3 pricing levels; $18, $28 and $38. Each restaurant is categorized in a pricing level. The price is for a three course meal. For some restaurants, its totally worth it because their regular menu is quite pricey. Some restaurants are so popular that the day the list comes out all their reservations are booked for the whole time period.

This year Dine Out Vancouver is from April 26 to May 6, 2010. Because it is so popular Tourism Vancouver doesn't release the list of restaurants till a week prior. This makes it difficult for me to plan a dinner for Dine Out. It doesn't give me much time to invite guests to the dinner. I will only be going to two dinners this year. Both of them are organized by my friends. I am just tagging along.

For the last 4 years, I have been spending a lot of money on eating out. Some people don't like spending lots of money eating out at restaurants. I think it is a whole experience. It is to enjoy the company of friends and to try new foods. Some restaurants are more relaxing and have a nice decor. It contributes to your whole dining experience. When you eat out, you don't have to worry about cooking and cleaning. unless you like cooking. Sometimes you just don't have time to cook.

Day 207: Imitation, a form of flattery?

I went to the Canucks game on Friday night for Game 5 of the playoffs. It was exciting and the energy was incredible. It was my first Canucks playoff game. I like Fin, the mascot. He's really cute and gets the crowd cheering for the Canucks. One of the highlights for me at this game was when Fin came out wearing green spandex. He was imitating the Green Men (http://www.facebook.com/canucksgreenmen?v=wall#!/canucksgreenmen?v=wall).

The Green Men sit beside the opponents penalty box. Every time the opponents get in the penalty box the Green Men mocks them by making crying faces or just being silly. I'm sure they opponents hate it when they get in the penalty box.

Was Fin wearing the green spandex to mock them or because he admires them?

I started my blog last summer. Then the movie Julie and Julia came out late in the summer about Julie writing on a blog for 365 days. Now I know two other people who has a 365 day challenge. One has a fitness challenge. He has a fitness goal and determined to get in shape / be in shape by day 365. He is running and doing yoga. The other person is a photographer and has a 365 day photo challenge. He is challenging himself to take a photo (a good photo?) every day and carrying his camera everywhere he goes. Maybe they got inspired by the movie? Maybe I inspired them?? hahah.. I don't know. If I did, they haven't told me.

Day 206: Glee / Canucks

I don't follow alot of shows but Glee is one show I follow. The season started again after a few month hiatus. The much anticipated Madonna episode was on Tuesday night. I was so excited to watch it. My favourite show and my favourite singer all in one. They sang about 10 of her songs. It seemed like there was one every 5 minutes. They sang her retro hits (Open Your Heart, Like a Virgin, etc). It was a Madonna sing along for me!

I was excited for the Glee episode with Madonna but I'm even more excited that Im going to see the Canucks vs Kings at GM Place tomorrow night. It's going to be a nail biting game. The series is tied at 2 - 2. I have never been to a playoff game before. I heard the energy there is incredible. I am hoping and praying really hard that the Canucks will win tomorrow's game. I paid an arm and a leg for the tix (seems like that to me). They better give me good entertainment value for me to get my money's worth.

Day 204: Sun Run

Completing the Sun Run is number 4 on my bucket list. I didn't think I would do it this year. But an acquaintance ask me in March to join a team this year. I said 'sure'. Of course I didn't realize how much training is involved. Now I am thinking I am crazy to join so late in the game. I have heard of some people doing the Sun Run at the last minute without any training. I am not THAT crazy.

From the time I committed to joining the team to the actual run is only 8 weeks. I did the walk / jog thing once before I went to Chicago. I went to the fitness three times in Chicago. Since I have been back (a week) I did the walk / jog thing twice. Only two and a half weeks to go! I did the walk / jog thing today for 6 km. Ok since I can do 6 km, I can push myself to do 10 km. It's only 4 more km! Go Lisa Go!

Day 203: People Come Into Your Life for a Reason‏

I didn't write the following. But I absolutely think it is true!

People Come Into Your Life for a Reason
ARE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE FOR A REASON, SEASON OR
LIFETIME?

PEOPLE COME INTO YOUR LIFE FOR A REASON

People come into your life for a reason,
a season or a lifetime. When you know which one
it is, you will know what to do for that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is
usually to meet a need you have expressed. They
have come to assist you through a difficulty, to
provide you with guidance and support, to aid you
physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may
seem like a godsend and they are. They are there
for the reason you need them to be. Then, without
any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient
time, this person will say or do something to bring
the relationship to an end.

Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met,
our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer
you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because
your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They
bring you an experience of peace or make you
laugh. They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it, it is real. But only for a season. LIFETIME
relationships teach you lifetime lessons,
things you must build upon in order to have a solid
emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson,
love the person and put what you have learned
to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but friendship is
Clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were
a reason, a season or a lifetime.
Send this to every friend that you have on-line,
including the person who sent it to you.

Day 202: Home cooked meal

I didn't realized that I would miss a home cooked meal. When I lived in Downtown, I had to cook my own meals. There were a bazillion restaurants within walking distance. I was in the US (Palm Springs and Chicago) and I ate out most of the time (as you know from all the restaurant blog postings). By the second week, I was dying for a comfort food meal or a home cooked meal. I settled for a crappy comfort food restaurant when I was in Oak Park (where Frank Lloyd Wright lived and Ernest Hemingway was born). Going to a restaurant everyday for every meal was tiring and time consuming (and costly too). Some days I only ate a meal a day because I was too lazy to head out for a meal. My parents mostly cook food that isn't available in restaurants. I like home cooked meals because I can eat as much as I want (I don't eat that much anymore). It is also less expensive them eating out all the time. I like cooking also. It is time consuming. I like cooking for more than myself. If I have time and am cooking for someone, I will be more than happy to cook.

Day 201: souvenirs

I like souvenirs. I like practical things. I like clothing with the name of the city on it. I like mugs too. I went to England in 1994 and bought a mug at every event ( seems like it). I still use the mugs. I thought of buying mugs in Chicago but it gets heavy. I bought some cool shot glasses. I bought myself very few souvenirs this trip. I became a temporary Blackhawks fan. I wanted a zip up hoody. It was pricey at $65-75. I dont want to spend more on Blackhawks gear than on Canucks gear. I ended up buying myself a Hawks touque. It was useful in the cold weather. I also bought myself a zip up shirt with Chicago on it and a purse that says Chicago. At Frank Lloyd Wrights house and the Robie House , i wanted to buy something. I ended up getting a small magnet. It was affordable, not a book, and light. There were a gazillion books on Frank Lloyd Wright but i didnt want to carry them back to Vancouver. I doubt i would read them anyways.

Day 200: The Buried Life

When I was in Chicago, I was watching Oprah. On Oprah was these four guys who have an MTV show. Their show is called The Buried Life (http://www.mtv.ca/tvshows/buried-life/video.jhtml). It's about their adventures in accomplishing their list. On the episode when they were on Oprah, it was about them wanting to play basketball with the president of the US. Who would think four random guys can get access to the president of the United States, nevermind play basketball with him? Well, they did get to play basketball with the president but for only 10 minutes. They used their connections and were persistent in getting what they want. I think it helped that it was four of them and they have a MTV show. With my list, it's only me!

How their show inspired me:

- to make my list bigger and better
- get accomplices...I mean friends to join me in my adventures
- they also 'pay it forward' and help others

Day 199: Back to reality

I had a great time in Palm Springs and Chicago. The kids were good this year. It was hot like usual there. We went out to eat more this year than last year. Chicago was cold (except for two days when my friends where there, lucky them). I got a tan those two days. It was fun to learn and explore what Chicago had to offer. Yes, I finally excepted that I had no chance in getting Oprah tickets. I was satisfied in learning more about Frank Lloyd Wright and Ernest Hemingway.

After so many days of no set schedule or routine, it's back to work!

Day 198: twelveth day in Chicago

The most important thing I wanted to see was Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House today. It is in the Hyde Park neighbourhood. This is one of his most famous designs. They are in the process of renovating the inside but they still give tours. The presevation society does an excellent job of renovating his houses inside and out. In the dining room there is no furniture. The tour guide told us it is in the Smart Museum, which happens to be a few blocks away.

Off to the Smart Museum I go. I got there and found out it was free to go in. It was a pleasent surprise. One thing I had to do here which I never have done at any other museums is to sign a waiver regarding the art pieces that i photogragh. I was only interested in seeing the Frank Lloyd Wright's dining set and that was the only thing I photographed. It was time for lunch. I found a place called Ribs and Bibs (http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/ribs-and-bibs-chicago.html).

At the Robie House they had a map of local attractions. On the map there was Obama's house. After i ate my ribs i asked the lady who worked there if Obama's house is nearby. She said 'yes. You just have to go down to 51st and turn left. It has barracades around it. You cant miss it'. Ok the directions were simple enough i thought. I walked down the street to try to find 51st. I couldnt seem to find 51st. I asked a man walking with his son where 51st is. He said 51st is also known as Hyde Park Rd. Ohhhh ok i didnt know that. He said turn at Hyde Park Road and you cant miss it cause its barracaded and the secret service are there. Well they both were right. I just walked down 51st and saw the barracades with the secret service logo and knew i was there. I was scared to take pictures because the secret service were there. I asked some young guys walking by if it was ok to take pictures. They said Yes as long as its behind the fence. I was taking some pictures and noticed that one secret service agent was walking towards me. I just finished taking my pictures. He just asked how i was and walked by me. When i finished, i took the bus to the nearest train station. At the bus stop i started talking to this older man. He's older with no teeth and kinda sketchy looking but i think he's harmless. I was asking him about what happens when the president is in town.

After viewing the president's house, i was off to see Andersonville. Andersonville is supposed to be a neighbourhood with Swedish roots. There are Swedish specialty shops and the Swedish Museum. It would've been interesting to see. I went from south Chicago to the northern part. From the pamphlet i got (which i left at the hotel), there were just a bunch of shops. I knew most of the businesses would be closed when i got there but i just wanted to see the neighbourbood.

Day 197: eleventh day in Chicago

I woke up early because they only have one Untouchables Tour at 10am today. I have tomorrow booked for something else. The Untouchables Tour is a bus tour taking us to all the significant places of the gangster era of the 20's and 30's. It takes us thru all parts/neighbourhoods of Chicago. It was a two hour tour. It was very interesting. Our tour guides made it fun and entertaining.

I got a flyer with info of a free tour of the Federal Reserve Bank. It started at 1 pm. I had a quick hot dog and shake from Portillo's (http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/portillo-chicago.html) before heading there. I thought we get to tour the building. I think that is too much to ask. We sat in a room listening to a man explain to us the importance of the Federal Reserve Bank. After his speel, we watched a short movie on what he talked about. Boring! There is a visitors centre where they explain about the bank again. They also had a million dollars on display, the timeline of money, old currency, and counterfeit money. I got my picture taken with the million dollars. Bills have a life span of about 21 months. After that they are shredded. I got a souvenir baggy of shredded money.

This was my souvenir shopping day.

When I finished, i headed to Bandera (http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/bandera-chicago.html) for dinner. After dinner I went back to my hotel to catch up on writing on my blogs.

Day 196: tenth day in Chicago

Today I decided to venture into a suburb. I went to Oak Park. I got the pamphlet a few days ago and there were a few things that interest me. It is about a 20-30 min train ride on the green line to the end.

My first destination was the house of Frank Lloyd Wright. He is the most notable architect of the 20th century. It is the house he lived in his first few years of his architecture career. There is a walking tour of his house. There is also a walking tour of houses he designed in the neighbourhood. There are about 15 of them (one is a church). The picture above is one of his earlier houses.

By this time it was about 3 pm and i didnt eat yet. I felt like something comforting and hardy. I found a diner that served what i was looking for. It was called The Cozy Corner Diner (http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/cozy-corner-restaurant-chicago.html).

After my meal I was off to see the birthplace and museum of Ernest Hemingway. I dont know anything about him. I thought it may be ineteresting to learn more about him. I went to the birthplace first. The admission price includes both the birthplace and the museum. They are about two blocks away from each other. Both places closes at 5 pm. i got to the birthplace at 4pm. I was the only one on the tour. The tourguide basically told me about Ernest's life. I finished the tour at 445pm. I then rushed over to the museum. In the 15 mins i was there i just scanned thru the posters of his life.

I decided that i should catch a show or musical while I am here. The big show that is advertised is Billy Elliott. I went to the theatre to get tix. The cheapest tix was $28. The guy at the tix booth beside me took the last tix. I wandered down the street to the Goodman Theatre. The show that was playing there is A True History of the Johnstown Flood. I managed to get a tix for $23 for a mezzaine seat. I thought it was based on a true story. It was partially based on true events. The characters and their stories are fictional. The flood was a true event. It would be a parallel to a fictional story occuring during Hurricane Katrina. It was a long day for me. I just went back to my hotel after the show.

Day 195: ninth day in Chicago

I started my day with a healthy hardy breakfast:
McDonald's. The day before at the Blackhawks game they gave us contest cards. There was a coupon for a free egg mcmuffin if the Hawks score the first goal. They did and i got my free egg mcmuffin.

My first destination is the Chicago History Museum. It is free Mondays. i like free. It was quite interesting. They have various exhibits on the different important periods in Chicago's history. I feel like i know more about Chicago than Vancouver after going to this museum.

After the museum, I went to Oz Park. When my friends were here we tried to find Oz Park but couldn't find it. This time i had a better map and it helped. This park is dedicated to the Wizard of Oz. There were statues of Dorothy and Toto, the Tinman, the Lion and the Scarecrow. The author lived nearby hence the dedication.

I was really hungry by this time. I sat on a bench at Oz Park and there was this guy who was sitting by himself on the bench beside me. I asked what restaurants he recommemed nearby. One restaurant he suggested was Cafe Ba Ba Reeba. I saw this restaurant in my tourist book also. ( http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/cafe-ba-ba-reeba-chicago.html)

I was close to Second City. The show started at 8pm. I was thinking if i get back there at 7pm and if i can get tickets, i will see the show. I had an hour and a half to kill. I went to the shops on Armitage Street, Wells (Old Town) and Division Street to State Street. I got back to Second City at 645pm. They had tickets available and i went to see the show. The show is very similar to our Theartresports. I was laughing the whole time.

Day 194: eight day in chicago

I really wanted to watch a Blackhawks game while i was in Chicago. I figured out how to get to the United Center because I went there the night before for the Bulls game. I didnt have a ticket. I thought i would be able to get a tix at the ticket booth. On the bus i met three fellow Canadians. It was a dead givaway cause one was wearing a Winnipeg Jets jersey and another one was wearing a Calgary Flames jersey. The Blackhawks were playing againest the Flames. They had standing room tickets. They told me where they will be standing and said hopefully they will meet me inside. I went to the ticket booth. The cheapest ticket thet had was $65. I wasnt willing to spend that much. I found a dodgy scalper down the street and managed to get a tix from him for $35. I got inside and managed to find my three fellow Canadians. I ended up standing with them the whole time. The game was great. I felt like i had split personality. The first half of the game i was cheering for the Hawks. The Flames were losing and i felt bad for them. I started cheering for them the last half of the game. I may be a good luck charm for chicago teams.

We were all hungry after the game. My friend recommended Shaw's Crab House. So the guys joined me for dinner. (http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/shaw-crab-house.html) It was pouring rain after the game. Tourenchal rain and lighting. After dinner we went for a drink. I found a place relatively near by. It was another piano bar but this time there were two piano players. It is called Howl At The Moon. We were there for a few hours then went across the street to another pub for another drink. It was way past my bedtime and we cabbed it home.

Day 193: seventh day in Chicago

We started our day with breakfast at Rick Bayless' restaurant Frontera Grill (see restaurant blog - http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com/2010/04/frontera-grill-chicago.html)

After the meal we did a bit of shopping then headed to Wicker Park. Its a very neat neighbourhood. There are many independant shops. It is like Commercial Drive or Main St.

After Wicker Park, we headed to the Chicago French Market. We expected it to be like Granville Island with lots of vendors and shops. But it was indoors and about half the size of the Granville Island Public Market. We walked thru the whole thing in five minutes.

After that we went to eat dinner at Avec (see restaurant blog - http://lisa-restuarants.blogspot.com/2010/04/avec-chicago.html).

Now it was time to head to the Bulls game. They played againest the Bobcats. It was fun. Everytime there was a time out or intermission, there would be an audience participated game or the dancers would come on.

After the game one of my friends and I went to the Signature Lounge on the 96th flr of the John Hancock Building. It was so beautiful at nite. We only ordered a small appy and ordered a drink.

Restaurant blog updated:
Orange for breakfast
Bistrot Margot for lunch
Texas de Brazil for dinner
Http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com

Today we started the day early. We went to Orange at 9am (see restaurant blog).
We then haeded to Lincoln Park. At Lincoln Park we wanted to see the conservatory and the zoo. They are both free. The conservatory was neat. It had so many types of plants and flowers. The zoo was amazing. I expected a small zoo like in Vancouver. I was so wrong! It was at least four times larger than Vancouvers zoo. Its all free. There were a bazillions types of animals there. We even saw a couple of primates mating. Not for childrens' eyes! Lincoln Park borders Old Town. We walked thru Old Town and had lunch at Bistrot Margot (see restaurant blog). We took the bus back into town. We had to make a pit stop at Tiffany's. Then we headed to a boat tour. It is part architectural tour. It was a 90 minute tour thru the river and Lake Michigan. After the boat tour we headed to dinner at Texas de Brazil (see restaurant blog).

Day 191: fifth day in chicago

Restaurant blogs updated:
The Village (italian food) for lunch
Pizzeria Uno for dinner
Http://lisa-restaurants.blogspot.com

Today i met up with my friends at 1030am. We walked on the Magnificent Mile. We were taking a 1pm architectural tour on modern skyscrapers. We went to the Chicago Cultural Center. In there was a culinary concierge. I picked his brain on his restaurant suggestions. I was looking for the famous hot dog. He suggested a place by the start of our architectural tour. The place is called Max's. I finally had the famous hot dog. It tasted very similar to a regular hot dog except the toppings are larger. No ketchup allowed! I had a cheese dog. It came with relish, a small sliver of a pickle, two small slices of tomatoes. We did the walking tour. It was two hours long. We then went to lunch at the Village (see restaurant blog).

The Art Institute of Chicago is free on thursdays after 5pm. We went after our lunch. When we got there we were surprised to see a massive line. But the line moved very quickly. There was so much to see. It is larger than the Van Art Gallery. It took us two hours to finish seeing the exhibits we wanted to see. We saw about 90 percent of the gallery. We then went to Pizzeria Uno (see restaurant blog). We called it a night after the pizza.

Health and wellness blog updated:

Today was a slow and relaxing day for me. I woke up at 11 am. I went to the fitness centre (see health and wellness blog). By the time i finished showering and getting ready it was about 230pm. My destination was to the Oprah Studios. I wanted to see if they had any stand by tickets we can get. But no luck. The only way to get tickets is online. Boo hoo for me :( ....... The Oprah Studios is located close to Greektown. I thought since I was in Greektown i should have some greek food. I went to The Parthenon for food (see restaurant blog). After my food i went back to my hotel to wait for my friends. They met me at 6 pm at my hotel lobby. We went to dinner at Heaven at Seven (see restaurant blog). After dinner, one of my friends and i walked off our food on the Magnificent Mile.
